Traveling Responsibly is Simple with Trees4Travel
In keeping with our ongoing commitment to be a leader in sustainable and responsible travel, we have partnered with Trees4Travel, an organization that creates “Planet & People Positive Travel.” We sat down with Nico Nicholas, Co-founder and CEO of Trees4Travel, and Elkie Nicholas, Co-founder and CTH (Chief Tree Hugger), to get all the details.
Q: Tell us more about Trees4Travel.
Trees4Travel was devised by founders sceptical of what lay behind the ‘Offset Carbon’ tick box and in response to the general malaise regarding carbon reduction. Their mission was to develop an honest tech solution the travel world could understand, adopt, and integrate as an industry standard.
Trees4Travel works to plant indigenous trees to help rewild the world and support communities reliant on the Earth’s forests for their income. In addition, Trees4Travel is building clean energy infrastructure to release island populations from dependence on expensive and damaging fossil-fueled electricity. Trees4Travel believes in Planet & People Positive Travel.
Q: How does the Trees4Travel process work?
Travel advisors simply gift a tree to their client with each booking. Trees4Travel will then provide a second tree for every additional tree the traveler plants in the name of their advisor.
Q: Why is planting trees such an important component of regenerative travel?
Trees are scientifically proven to be the most effective absorbers of carbon. In their lifetime, they can store up to 6,834 kg of CO2. In addition, they provide habitat for animals and prevent soil erosion (another significant source of carbon storage), all whilst providing fruits, medicines, and shelter for forest communities. No man-made solution even comes close to this level of effectiveness when trying to reverse the climate change effects caused by CO2 production.
Q: Where are the trees planted, and how are these locations chosen?
We currently have planting projects in several regions of the Americas. We choose regions that will have the greatest holistic effect. We want to plant forests that not only repair damaged land and rewild the planet, but that also provide a viable income for communities that might otherwise be forced to farm timber or clear cut for cattle farming. We plant in developing countries where we can help impoverished communities lift themselves out of extreme poverty.
Q: Is Trees4Travel currently working on any special projects?
Our Island Love program is about to begin its first project in specific island nations which will be announced soon. We are thrilled by the tremendous enthusiasm we have received from both the island governments and the local communities, as well as the travel community. As we begin to bring clean energy to islands, we will have a direct positive impact on the welfare of island nations. Our energy will be significantly more affordable, will create jobs, and will provide investment opportunities. We simply could not be more excited or prouder to be realizing this dream of spreading the love. Travel for good!
Q: BONUS: If two people were traveling round trip by air from New York City to Vancouver and spending four nights in a hotel, how many trees would need to be planted to take climate positive action?
This would require 10 trees per person which would be an addition of only $15 to their journey.
